Commercial Bakery Design & Prep to Open: Converting a 1930s home into a commercial bakery during COVID isn't for the meek. This project prioritized ADA code, food code, programming needs (the npo bakery employed and training folks with disabilities), while also balancing a need for a strong brand identity.
Each room was named for a dessert menu item and several sprinkle pattern murals where created throughout the space. Thoughtful touches like a Disability Rights Movement Timeline designed as info wall panels, a legacy wall with playfully hung wooden spoons that each alum painted in logo colors, a disability library with titles by disabled authors for customers to enjoy, and several play kitchens areas for kids with and without disabilities to play together while their families dined in – all created a welcoming and defined brand experience for customers that celebrated the disability community.
- created the overall layout with restaurant retail (kitchen, dining, pos), classroom, office, and storage space within a converted home
- managed permits and construction to open a commercial bakery
- created the full design to balance considerations like food code while also injecting strong branding moments for customers to experience
- took on many DIY projects (and managed volunteers to help) - did all of the painting throughout the interior, sourced and flipped unique furniture find like vintage church pews to use as booth seating, and created original art and murals to support the aesthetic
